Assertiveness
Being able to assert yourself effectively is an important communication skill.
Behavioural therapists often classify people into one of three categories when communicating with others.
These are:
Passive people are those who will often go along with the needs and requests of others regardless of whether they feel comfortable with the situation. Pacifists may bottle up their feelings which can subsequently lead to stress and anxiety, tension, headaches and migraine.
The Aggressive type will more likely vent their frustrations on others in an 'I am right, you are wrong' scenario. They can be impatient, controlling, highly competitive and suffer from free floating hostility. These people are more likely to suffer from coronary disease.
The Passive and Aggressive personalities have been classed as Aggressive (Type A) and Passive (Type B), Type A Behavior: Its Diagnosis and Treatment, Meyer Friedman however other psychologists have quoted Passive Aggressive Behaviour which is a combination of the two.
In contrast, the Assertive type has the ability to communicate effectively by accepting another person's point of view whilst at the same time being able to express their own point and without making someone else feel uncomfortable about what they are saying, which leads to a 'win, win situation'.
